What is Hardcore Mode?

Hardcore mode is Minecraft's ultimate challenge where players have one life. Upon death, players are permanently banned or forced into spectator mode. The difficulty is locked to hard, making survival more challenging.

Quick Guide for New Worlds

  1. Stop your server
  2. Open server.properties
  3. Change hardcore=false to hardcore=true
  4. Save and restart your server

For Existing Worlds (NBTExplorer Required)

Changing server.properties alone isn't enough for existing worlds. You must also edit the level.dat file:

  1. Stop your server and download the level.dat file
  2. Open it with NBTExplorer
  3. Find the "hardcore" tag and change its value from 0 to 1
  4. Save and upload the modified file back to your server
  5. Restart your server

Effects of Hardcore Mode

  • Players have only one life
  • Death results in server ban or spectator mode
  • Difficulty is locked to hard
  • Monsters are more dangerous
  • Hunger depletes faster
  • Set difficulty=hard for the full experience
  • Consider natural-regeneration=false for extra challenge
  • Use plugins to modify the death penalty if desired
