How to Increase Build Limit on Your Minecraft Server

This guide will show you how to increase the build height limit on your Minecraft server, with different methods depending on your Minecraft version.

For Minecraft 1.18 and Later Versions

Starting with Minecraft 1.18, Mojang removed the ability to modify build height through server properties. However, you can still increase the build limit using datapacks.

Using the Sky High Datapack

  1. Download the Sky High datapack from Modrinth
  2. Stop your Minecraft server
  3. Navigate to your world's datapack folder (usually located at world/datapacks/)
  4. Upload the downloaded Sky High zip file (do not unarchive it)
  5. Start your server

The Sky High datapack will increase your world height from the default -64 to 320 blocks, to an impressive -64 to 1024 blocks (1088 blocks total).

Important Notes for 1.18+ Servers

  • Always backup your world before adding or removing datapacks
  • If you remove the datapack later, any blocks placed above the vanilla build limit will be deleted
  • The datapack is compatible with most other modifications
  • You may see a warning about experimental settings when joining the world

For Minecraft 1.17 and Earlier Versions

For older Minecraft versions (1.17 and earlier), you can modify the build limit directly through the server properties:

  1. Stop your Minecraft server
  2. Navigate to the server Files section
  3. Find and open the server.properties file
  4. Locate the max-build-height option
  5. Change the value to your desired height (default is 256)
  6. Save the file and restart your server

Important Notes for 1.17 and Earlier

  • The maximum recommended build height is 256 blocks
  • Setting extremely high values may impact server performance
  • Changes affect the entire server world
  • Always backup your server files before making changes

Performance Considerations

Increasing the build limit can affect your server's performance:

  • Higher build limits require more server resources
  • World generation takes longer
  • More memory usage for chunk loading
  • May impact server tick rate in heavily built areas

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you encounter problems after increasing the build limit:

  • Verify the datapack is properly installed
  • Check server logs for any error messages
  • Ensure your server has adequate RAM allocated
  • Confirm compatibility with other installed mods or plugins

Best Practices

To maintain optimal server performance while using increased build limits:

  • Start with smaller increases and test performance
  • Monitor server resource usage
  • Keep regular backups of your world
  • Use optimization mods if needed
  • Consider setting view-distance lower if experiencing lag
